Abstract

In this chapter, a practical concept for resource management in the downlink of a multi-user MIMO-OFDM system is presented, which aims at high user rates while requiring a limited amount of feedback only. An extended score-based scheduling approach guarantees a fair resource allocation to the users, ensuring that users are served even if they experience poor channel conditions. The resource management concept is evaluated in terms of its achievable spectral efficiency on link level, where an isolated cell is considered, as well as on system level, where an interference-limited multi-cell system with frequency reuse factor equal to one is considered. Link level investigations show that a considerable proportion of the capacity of the MIMO broadcast channel can be achieved with a comparatively low amount of required feedback. The multiplexing gains achievable on system level are shown to be similar to those known from information theoretic analysis of an isolated point-to-point link. Finally, the resource scheduling is performed on channels measured in a real-world scenario with an LTE test-bed. Results are compared to the ones from link and system level investigations, showing convenient agreements and thus substantiating findings from theoretical investigations.
